Top 5 SEO risks you should avoid

October 31, 2019 SEO

Developing a strong SEO strategy can be difficult, especially if you don’t have a lot of experience or a strong digital marketing background. However, there are some things that you should always do, and some things that you should avoid at all costs.

There are quite a few SEO mistakes that are a lot more common than they should be, and you should do everything in your power to avoid them. However, if you’re like many other people, you might not even know that you’re making mistakes.

With this in mind, I’ve put together this list of the top 5 SEO risks that you should never take:

  1. Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing is essentially the process of creating low-quality content that’s filled with keywords in a way that’s unnatural and reads poorly. In the past, keyword stuffing was common, but Google has cracked down on it in recent years.

You might get away with keyword stuffing for a while, but you will be caught and penalized eventually. Don’t ever fall into the trap of creating poor quality content that’s unnaturally full of keywords. Instead, focus on adding well-written, informative content with keywords naturally placed throughout.

  1. Ignoring Your Sitemap

This isn’t really a risk, but it’s such a common mistake that I just had to add it to the list. When you build a new website, you need to submit your sitemap to the major search engines. This makes it easier for their crawler bots to navigate your site, especially when you’re just getting started.

  1. Making Regular Small Changes

Although it can be tempting to continually update your website content, it’s important not to overdo it. Sure, you need to make sure that you’re making small changes from time to time to make sure that you’re continually optimising for SEO, but if you make too many changes too fast you could lose your existing search engine ranking.

  1. Rejecting Too Many Backlinks

Although you might not realise it, you can actually choose to reject backlinks if you want to. If you’re working in a competitive field, you might find that your competitors are linking back to your website from spammy or poor-quality sites in an attempt to sabotage you.

It’s important to reject these backlinks, but don’t be tempted to reject neutral backlinks – there’s no point in rejecting them, because they aren’t doing any harm to your website and they could turn out to be beneficial later.

  1. Deleting Entire Pages

Generally, each page of your website will be contributing to your SEO strategy in some way. It’s therefore important to be very careful about deleting any content, otherwise you might find that your search engine ranking suffers.

Final Word

All things considered, there are some SEO risks that you should take, and some that you should avoid at all costs. I’ve listed some of the worst SEO mistakes that people make in this article, but make sure that you do your own research to ensure that you’re doing things the right way from the start.
